This fully outfitted mannequin shows all of
the cold weather gear required by a World War Two bomber or fighter
crewman to try and stay warm at the high altitudes the aircraft flew at
during the war. An A-14 oxygen mask manufactured by the Ohio
Chemical and Manufacturing Company is part of this excellent display at
the Butler County Warbirds Museum located at the Middletown, OH airport.

The Butler County Warbird Museum was able to
obtain a surplus A-14 oxygen mask for its display to include the World
War Two shipping box. Author's photo.

Table 2 shows that Contract Number W33-038-AC-3128 was actually
manufactured by the company's Minneapolis, MN plant between May and
December 1944. However, the label on the shipping box shows the
company's home location in Cleveland, OH. Author's photo.

This A-14 oxygen mask is on display at the
National Museum of the United States Air Force in Riverside, OH.
There is no manufacturer's identification but due to the $8,004,000 in
oxygen mask contracts that the Ohio Chemical and Manufacturing Company
had during World War Two, this may very well be one of its masks.
In any event, this and the following photos give several different views
of the mask. Author's photo.

The interior of the mask has a soft cloth
lining. This was important as wearing the oxygen mask for long
periods was uncomfortable and known to cause chaffing of the wearer's
face. The soft cloth was an important part of the oxygen mask to
make it more comfortable and mitigate the chaffing. Author's photo.
Next are several pages from the handbook on
the Type A-14 Demand Oxygen Mask.

The introduction in Section I only shows The
Cleveland Chemical and Manufacturing Company as the only supplier of the
A-14 oxygen mask.
